So a while ago (April 2015) my cousin Pam came to me and asked me to make her "hair piece" for her wedding. I readily responded with a big-fat-"YES"! But then soon had regrets because I am really not a "hair things" person. I NEVER wear them and I certainly haven't ever had a reason to make one before, but I'm a crafter who likes a challenge. So I talked myself through the following 6 mos. of anxiety attacks. I studied, and pinned, and studied, and pinned. I would be lying if I said that I wasn't thinking of ways to "get out of it", I even thought of just buying one online and admitting that I was clueless.
But I pressed on... For about 5 months I bought every chiffon pink, ivory, and navy (her wedding colors) craft item that I happened upon at the craft store, all kinds of stuff. Feathers, old costume jewelry, vintage lace, rhinestones, etc... all the while not knowing exactly what I was going to make, not knowing what of the countless items that I had acquired I would actually use. It was during this time I thought to use some of our grandmother's (My great-grandma, Pam's grandma) brooches in the pieces, and thanks to my Aunt Barb that idea came to fruition! See, great-grandma Sadler passed away almost 20yrs ago and we have a huge family! I started by asking my grandma (her daughter) if she knew of any brooches of her mom's kicking around. She said that she didn't have any, but that she would ask around, when lo and behold Aunt Barb had a whole BOX! A lot of them weren't of wedding quality, but I was determined to use the ones that I could!
My cousin and I shared a Pinterest board throughout this time which was super helpful! It was nice to have a visual reference of what she was looking for. It took 5 months (almost to the day), but I managed to secure the "working" designs in place with some final tweaks made.
Once I was done with her piece (the top one in the photos) I made an extra piece (second pic) while I waited to hear back about whether or not she wanted me to make mini-clips for our other relative-bridesmaids (She said "YES!") so I made the minis in the third pic. As soon as Pam saw those I got a text suggesting that maybe the other two bridesmaids would need some hair bling, so I ventured to create the two navy feather pieces with, NON-gma bling (Side-by-side pics).
In the end I think I have a happy cousin and some fascinating fascinators! :)
